The Government is Lying to You and Trying to Kill You (or, I Tried to Write an Aubade but Wrote This Instead)
The Government is Lying to You and Trying to Kill You (or, I Tried to Write an Aubade but Wrote This Instead)
Wake up to a newsfeed chock full of atrocity
Don’t want to leave my bed, can’t stay asleep
Can’t imagine leaving my country
Rooted here, I’m in too deep
Hounded by lies, gaslit by doctrine
Laws abandoned, how’s a gal to strategize?
It’s in the news, on TV, Instagram and Facebook feeds
Disorientation caused by tear gas particles
Elders tackled and handcuffed in the streets
Parents dragged from their vehicles
Meanwhile, attacks on food sovereignty
Playing cat-and-mouse games with essential needs
Wake up another day, feeling unsafe
Bid adieu to dreams and comfort
Uneasiness pricks resignation to fate
The daylight mocks me
Outside is a forbidden lure
If the government doesn’t kill me
I’ll choke on my own bile
Alone, forsaken, reviled.
