The Heaviness and Lightness of Old Age

By Elizabeth Harper

My body is so heavy
It never used to feel that way
Pendulous breasts, tight muscles,
Lower back pain, no desire to play

Maybe I should try yoga
The idea doesn’t appeal to me at all
Maybe death is near
All it would take is one good fall

Ambition and romance now seem
A horrendous waste of time
As do politeness, obligation,
Any interest in projects not mine

“You do you” is the only advice that matters
Though defeat and rejection I still recall
Nagging voices an insistent clatter
No, I never did heed their call
