I Believe… [Your Delusion is Showing]

By Don Hall

…that one of the quickest ways to get me to completely dismiss you and any opinion you espouse is to use a shorthand slur to describe a group of people.

…that the argument that goes “If you believe abortion should be illegal, you are in favor of women dying from illegal abortions” is nonsense and dangerously ineffective rhetoric. You can be in favor of Green Energy and not be in favor of the massive job loss caused by it in sectors with with a labor force employed by Oil & Gas. You can be in favor of gun control and consumer oversight and not be in favor of eliminating the Second Amendment. Progress begins with bridges, not moral absolutes.

…that if you see the world as an Either/Or proposition, a place of definable Good and Evil, and a belief that the righteous will prevail, you’re living in a delusion fueled by comic books, blockbuster movies, and religious propaganda. Go watch Requiem for a Dream, Glenngarry Glen Ross and Magnolia, and grow up.

... that if your big takeaway to anyone joining the armed services following 9/11 is that they “went overseas to kill brown people” your understanding of international geopolitical dynamics are that of a fourth grader.

…that children, activists, politicians, and assholes demand respect; adults show respect and thus earn it in return. Trust is given; respect is earned.
