Notes from the Post-it Wall | Week of August 3, 2025

by David Himmel

• The new War of the Worlds on Amazon is a parody of the first month in COVID lockdown. It has to be. This can’t be a real attempt at making a sci-fi thriller.

• Nothing is sexier than a gentle intertwining of the legs at a sticky bar.

• I’m not one to engage in forced fun activities at work or school. I attended just one pep rally in high school. I’ve tried to lean into this kind of stuff at my kids’ schools and camps. I want to expose them to everything and not instill my malcontent nature on them—let them determine how they’ll respond to this stuff as they get older. But I just received, like, the third email today about yet another event/fundraiser/community party, and I’m done. I just can’t. I don’t want my kids to be seen as outsiders, but I think being outsiders who make the occasional appearance at, say, a Halloween Costume Contest the first week of October will crank up their cool level.

• The most fortunate people in the world are those who are divorced without kids.

• As things have gotten worse for civilians in Gaza while Israel continues to escalate the conflict there, my Jewish friends who once were super excited about defending the first wave of bombing hospitals and schools, and blockading humanitarian aid have gotten real quiet lately. And to them, let me say this: Guys… Shalom. You know, it’s okay to support Israel’s right to exist and disagree with its politics and war effort. It doesn’t make you an anti-Semite. However, not speaking out against Israel’s malicious efforts in Gaza with the same fervor you had at the start of those whole thing, does—at least a little bit—make you part of the problem. Changing your mind doesn’t make you a hypocrite. Not acknowledging it does.

• A real man scratches his mosquito bites until they bleed.
