  • Haymarket Pub & Brewery 737 West Randolph Street Chicago, IL, 60661 United States (map)

Chicago’s Washington Square Park, where orators (“soapboxers”) held forth on warm-weather evenings from the 1910s through the mid-1960s.  In its heyday during the 1920s and 1930s, poets, religionists, and cranks addressed the crowds, but the mainstays were soapboxers from the revolutionary left.

In today’s almost absurd partisanship and polarization, Chicago is the place to reintroduce the concept of a true dialectic in opposing views.  Keeping in the fashion of today’s scene, the Live Lit version of this soapboxing only seems appropriate and holding forth in the pub & brewery named for the legendary Haymarket district fitting.

Thus, Literate Ape presents BUGHOUSE!, a 75-minute show designed to interrogate concepts, proselytize truth, and dissect popular thought through a lens of skeptical artistry.  Three bouts, six warriors, three decisions.  BUGHOUSE! aims to definitively answer the most (and least) important questions of the day.

“Is Facebook Good or Evil?”
“Should the nation’s police force be abolished?”
“Is Ben Affleck a better Batman than Michael Keaton?”

These questions and so many more will be explored, debated and answered by a singular deciding judge (randomly selected from the audience) and soapboxed by some of Chicago’s finest writers, stand up comics, musicians, and poets.

For October 2nd, the lineup will be:
